A soft belly: a two-minute check you can do tonight

What the abdomen knows about your joints, your balance and your unspoken tension.

Your body is more sensitive than you think, as long as you can hear it and it is not exhausted. Here is a small example from my own house.

Crossing the minefield

I walk through my children’s room in the dark, which is a minefield of Lego pieces and toys the size of a pea. My foot dodges them on its own. The body senses danger at the level of joints and ligaments and steps around it before I know anything about it. I am just walking.

When the belly is stuck

Now imagine the abdomen is congested: the liver, the gallbladder, the intestines heavy and tight. That is a blow to the connective tissue corset that holds us upright, and the joints and ligaments are the first to suffer. Then come the sprains, the bumps, the small injuries. The body no longer has the freedom to dodge, because it has to choose between straining a ligament and stepping on the Lego. One of the visceral practitioners I studied with liked to cite judo athletes: the fighters who had regular abdominal work were injured far less often in competition than those who never touched their belly.

The check

You can test your own abdomen tonight. Lie on your back with your knees bent and walk your hands slowly across the whole belly with soft, sinking pressure, no hurry. A healthy belly is soft, evenly warm and painless everywhere. If you find a hard spot, or pressure brings pain, that is a sign of stagnation, tension or irritation in that area. Do not push through it. Just notice it.

Two questions

How comfortable are you touching your own belly? How safe does it feel? For many women the honest answer is “not very”, and that answer already says a lot. This is exactly the territory of Slavic and visceral bodywork: slow, respectful, deep work that gives the abdomen back its softness, and the whole body its freedom to move.
