Many people still think of cups as grandma’s remedy for a cold. In modern bodywork they are one of the strongest tools we have for working with fascia, and one of the most misunderstood.
Why it works
Connective tissue runs through the whole body, and fascia is its living web. Its layers are meant to glide over each other. Stress, sitting and old injuries make them stick together, and most muscle pain is born exactly there, in the glued layers. A cup creates a vacuum that lifts the tissue and physically separates the layers, giving them their movement back.
Life inside the cells
Cells are fed and cleaned through the connective tissue around them. When it is compressed and stagnant, nothing flows. When we work with cups, we open that flow: the small vessels release old, sluggish blood, circulation improves not only under the cup but across the whole area, and the tissue is literally fed from inside again.
How I work with them
I never treat a spot. I treat a system. If we work on the back, we work on the whole back, and we always begin with the neck and the diaphragm, to open the lymphatic pathways before anything else moves. Then the cups travel and rest along the area, and the body decides how deep it lets us go.
About the marks
The round marks after cupping are what scare people most, and they are not bruises. A bruise is a hit: broken vessels and bleeding under the skin. A cupping mark is the opposite: stagnant blood and fluids drawn up from the deep layers to the surface, where the body can clear them. The darker the mark, the more was sitting there. It does not hurt, and it fades in three to seven days. Many people watch their marks get lighter from session to session, as the tissue gets healthier.
What people feel after
Lightness across the whole area, a back that moves as one piece again, a deep, heavy relaxation the same evening, and often a very good night’s sleep. Sometimes emotions move too. The body keeps a lot in its fascia, and when the layers unglue, feelings can surface with them. That is welcome.
